Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857–1919) was an Italian opera composer and librettist from Naples, best known for the verismo opera Pagliacci, which premiered on 21 May 1892 at Teatro Dal Verme in Milan under conductor Arturo Toscanini. He maintained a long publishing relationship with Casa Sonzogno from the 1890s, including a 1914 film-rights licensing deal worth 10,000 lire.
