Cornelius Cardew (1936–1981) was a British experimental composer, pianist, and cellist/guitarist from Winchcombe, England, best known as a founder of the Scratch Orchestra and a member of the free improvisation group AMM. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music, assisted Stockhausen in Cologne, and became a central figure in British experimental music through graphic notation works like 'Treatise' and 'The Great Learning' before turning to political activism later in life. He died in a hit-and-run accident in 1981.
